The Quest for Balance, FERRAGAMO PRESENTS EQUILIBRIUM

In the magnificent setting of the Ferragamo Museum in Palazzo Spini Ferino in Florence, the Equilibrium exhibition expresses the story of a constant and collective search: the quest for formal perfection pursued by the Ferragamo brand, and the search for physical and interior equilibrium experienced by each and every one of us. A glistening portal calls attention to the event outside in Piazza Santa Trinità: the H-edge installation by the artist and designer Cecil Balmond. Once inside the exhibition, the visitor is  accompanied (or perhaps one should say kept in equilibrium) on a narrative journey by works of art from major international museums, by artists including Degas, Rodin, Matisse, Picasso, Albrecht Dürer and Kandinsky, but also by works by Bill Viola and Marina Abramović, from private galleries. To enrich the narrative dimension, audio contributions on the theme of balance can be heard from various personalities, including the mountain climber Reinhold Messner, the tight-rope artiste Philippe Petite, the writer Will Self and the ballerina Eleonora Abbagnnato. The exhibition is curated by Stefania Ricci and Sergio Risaliti, and will remain open until next April.

 

Ambientata nella splendita cornice del Museo Ferragamo, presso il Palazzo Spini Feroni di Firenze, la mostra Equlibrium racconta di una ricerca costante e condivisa: quella della perfezione formale intrapresa dall’azienda fiorentina, ma anche quella fisica ed interiore di ciascuno di noi. Un scintillante portale segnala la presenza dell’evento già in Piazza Santa Trinità: è l’installazione H-edge dell’artista e designer Cecil Balmond. Una volta varcata la soglia, il visitatore è accompagnato (o, sarebbe meglio dire, mantenuto in equilibrio) attraverso il suo viaggio narrativo da opere provenienti da rinomati musei esteri, quali quelli dedicati a Degas, Rodin, Matisse, Picasso, Albrecht Dürer e Kandinsky, ma anche dalle gallerie private che ospitano le opere dei contemporanei Bill Viola e Marina Abramović. A rendere ancor più completo e multidisciplinare il racconto, intervengono le testimonianze fuori campo di personalità quali l’alpinista Reinhold Messner, il funambolo Philippe Petite, lo scrittore Will Self e la ballerina Eleonora Abbagnnato. La mostra, curata da Stefania Ricci e Sergio Risaliti, sarà visitabile fino al prossimo Aprile.

Urban Installations, UNNUMBERED SPARKS LIGHT UP THE SKY

Unnumbered Sparks – an enormous fluctuating installation with a breathtaking visual impact – has launched an ongoing global journey from Vancouver. This mammoth technological art-project, designed by US artist Janet Echelman in collaboration with Aaron Koblin, creative director of the Google Creative Lab, is funded by Google. It consists of a huge net measuring 745 feet which floats like gossamer above the city landscape, animated by iridescent chromatic effects. It incorporates highly sophisticate connective technologies that permit spectators to creatively interact with it by making pictorial gestures on their smartphone and tablet touchscreens which instantly translate into huge visual effects in the sky. At nighttime the mingling improvised illuminations of countless digital painters dynamically light up the sky, making a rainbow that dances above the city.

 

E’ partito da Vancouver il viaggio che porterà Unnumbered Sparks, enorme installazione fluttuante di impressionante impatto visivo, ad attraversare il pianeta. La grande opera tecnologica è stata progettata dall’artista statunitense Janet Echelman in collaborazione con Aaron Koblin, direttore creativo presso il Google Creative Lab, per la nota azienda internazionale. La struttura è composta da una rete di 745 metri che sovrasta gli edifici animando il cielo con i suoi cangianti effetti cromatici. Una sofisticata tecnologia digitale incorporata al suo interno consente di istituire un rapporto interattivo con gli spettatori: sono loro, infatti, a determinare i fasci di luce che saettano sulla superficie dell’opera effettuando piccoli movimenti pittorici sui loro smartphone e tablet, che vengono riprodotti in tempo reale su larga scala. L’effetto è quello di un perenne arcobaleno sovrastante la città.

American Dream, GREGORY CREWDSON

The New York photographer Gregory Crewdson constructs images that tell dreamlike surreal stories. He creates film-set situations portraying American suburban stereotypes and then makes photographs that look like stills from tragic Hollywood films depicting the breakdown of the American Dream in solitary wastelands. Crewdson works with a large team of expert technicians in order to set up and take these pictures, which are then reworked and remounted to make the final image. This allows him, for instance, to create the extraordinary lighting effects that inject intriguing atmospheres into almost realistic narrative scenes. To underline his links with the cinema, Crewdson often uses film stars to play the leading roles in his photos, such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Julianne Moore. Those who missed his last personal exhibition at New York’s Gagosian Gallery can admire his photos in the illustrated book on his work published last year by Rizzoli.

 

Il fotografo newyorkese Gregory Crewdson compone immagini che raccontano storie oniriche e surreali. Ambientate in set cinematografici che ritraggono stereotipati sobborghi americani, le scene di Crewdson sono come fermo immagini sottratte a tragiche pellicole hollywoodiane che raccontano l’infrangersi del sogno americano in ampie distese di solitudine. Per la loro realizzazione Crewdson si avvale di una nutrita squadra di esperti e di una serie di scatti che vengono successivamente rielaborati e montati a costruire l’immagine finale; da questo stratagemma derivano gli eccezionali effetti di luce che tingono di affascinante inquetudine scene di realistica drammaturgia. Inoltre, a sottolineare ulteriormente l’ispirazione cinematografica, Crewdson ha spesso scelto come protagonisti dei suoi racconti divi del cinema, come Gwyneth Paltrow e Julianne Moore. Chi si fosse perso la sua ultima mostra personale presso la Gagosian Gallery di New York può ammirare le sue opere nell’omonimo volume editato lo scorso anno da Rizzoli.

Post-Pop Art, JEFF KOONS: A RETROSPECTIVE

New York’s Whitney Museum hosts a major Jeff Koons exhibition. Jeff Koons: a retrospective, which opens its doors on 27 June, will be first retrospective dedicated to his work and will bring together 120 objects created between 1979 and today, mounted in the Marcel Breuer Building prior to the Museum’s transfer to its new home. Curated by Scott Rothkopf with Nancy and Steve Crown, the event aims to celebrate the success of one of the most famous artists of the post-war period, a man who “throughout his career, has pioneered new approaches to the readymade, tested the boundaries between advanced art and mass culture, challenged the limits of industrial fabrication, and transformed the relationship of artists to the cult of celebrity and the global market.”

 

Il Withney Museum di New York dedica una mostra al grande artista statunitense Jeff Koons. L’esposizione Jeff Koons: a retrospective, che aprirà i battenti il 27 di giugno, sarà la prima retrospettiva dedicata all’opera dell’artista e raccoglierà 120 oggetti creati dal 1979 ad oggi, ospitandoli nel palazzo Marcel Breuer, prima dell’imminente trasferimento del museo nella sua nuova sede. La mostra, curata da Scott Rothkopf, Nancy e Steve Crown, intende così celebrare il successo di uno dei più famosi artisti del dopoguerra, colui che “nel corso della sua carriera, ha sperimentato nuovi approcci alla readymade, testato i confini tra arte avanzata e cultura di massa, sfidato i limiti di fabbricazione industriale e trasformato il rapporto degli artisti al culto della celebrità e al mercato globale.”

Paper sculptures, DIANA BELTRAN HERRERA TAKES WING

Design graduate, specializing in pottery, painter and photographer, Diana Beltran Herrera (Columbia, 1987) seems to be able to shape any kind of material into forms that conjure up unforgettable visions. Her paper birds soar feely against single-colour backgrounds, astonishing us with chromatic effects that explore the entire spectrum of visibility, suspended in tension above invisible worlds. She explains that her works aim to explore the relation between nature and mankind in contemporary society: hence her decision to work with degradable material that is also transformable, lightweight and precarious… an expression of the condition that mankind and nature share, and of our species’ duty to take more care of the wounded planet it inhabits.

 

Laureata in design, specializzata in ceramica, artista e fotografa, la giovanissima Diana Beltran Herrera (colombiana di classe 1987) sembra davvero in grado di plasmare ogni sorta di materia e dar vita a visioni di straordinario impatto visivo. I suoi uccelli di carta si librano leggeri su sfondi monocromatici per stupirci con effetti cromatici che attingono all’intero spettro del visibile, tesi nello sforzo di planare su chissà quale mondo fantastico. Le sue opere, sostiene l’artista, intendono esplorare la relazione tra natura e uomo nella società contemporanea; da qui, la scelta di un materiale deperibile e facilmente trasformabile, leggero e precario, come la condizione che accomuna gli uomini all’ambiente naturale cui appartengono e di cui dovrebbero essere i responsabili tutori.

Creative picks, DREAM SEQUENCE BY MADAME PERIPETIE

The German publisher Seltmann+Söhne presents Dream Sequence, the new photobook created by the artist Sylwana Zybura (in art Madame Peripetie), a highly eclectic Polish photographer resident in London. The book unveils an extended series of extraordinary portraits which conjure up imaginary characters in a style somewhere between dreamlike surrealism and dark science fiction, where limbs are not infrequently substituted by floral compositions or mysteriously futuristic cyborg parts.
Hence the book’s motto, “If it can be imagined, it exists”… and these portraits not only exist, they’re also ‘real’ in the sense that they are created without any photo retouching, using solely the artist’s extraordinary technical skill.
The photographic material in this superb volume (which can be bought on its publisher’s website) has already won numerous prizes, including the Double Gold at the 2011 Paris PX3 and a special mention at the 2013 International Photography Awards in New York.

 

È in uscita per la casa editrice tedesca Seltmann+Söhne Dream Sequence, il nuovo volume fotografico firmato dall’artista Sylwana Zybura (in arte Madame Peripetie), eclettica fotografa di origine polacca residente a Londra. Il libro contiene una lunga serie di eccezionali ritratti che inventano personaggi immaginari, a cavallo tra un surrealismo onirico e una dark novel di fantascienza, le cui membra sono talvolta sostituite da composizioni floreali o da avvenieristiche e misteriose protesi. Non a caso il motto del libro recita “if it can be imagined, it exists”, ed infatti i ritratti sono “reali”, ovvero realizzati senza l’ausilio di alcun fotoritocco, grazie alla straordinaria capacità tecnica dell’artista. Il materiale fotografico che compone il volume (acquistabile sul sito dell’editore) si è già aggiudicato numerosi premi, tra i quali il Double Gold del PX3 2011 di Parigi ed una menzione speciale all’International Photography Awards 2013 di New York.

Chameleons at play, EMMA HACK

An Australian artist based in Adelaide, specialising in camouflage aesthetics, Emma Hack has created a series of artworks called Wallpaper, in collaboration with the Florence Broadhurst wallpaper company. These works are a fascinating cross between painting, body painting and photography, where the artist masks the human body within backgrounds of Florence Broadhurst’s elaborate neo-Liberty wallpaper designs, creating strange narrative interplays in a mood of dreamlike realism. Emma’s activities involve her in both the international art world and the advertising industry: in 2012 her notoriety was hugely boosted by her painterly contribution to the music video for Gotye’s song “Somebody that I used to know”.

 

Artista australiana con base ad Adelaide e regina del camouflage, Emma Hack, realizza la serie Wallpaper in collaborazione con la ditta di carte da parati Florence Broadhurst. In queste opere l’artista, la cui arte si colloca da sempre al crocevia tra pittura, body painting e fotografia, maschera la forma umana sullo sfondo di elaborati disegni neo-liberty, in un gioco narrativo di raro realismo onirico. Emma, tanto impegnata sullo scenario artistico internazionale quanto attiva nel campo dell’advertising, nel 2012 ha fatto conoscere il suo nome grazie alla propria collaborazione nella realizzazione del video musicale di Gotye, “Somebody That I Used To Know”.

Reinventing embroidery, JOANA VASCONCELOS

Joana Vasconcelos is a Parisian-born artist of Portuguese origin. She plays flamboyantly with traditional decorative techniques in order to stimulate reflections on gender stereotypes, social classes and national identities. Her works are somewhere between Duchamp ready-mades and Pop Art oversized objects, taking traditional Portuguese decorative techniques and boldly revisiting and resizing them until their connotations are subverted… especially their original social roles as acceptable expressions of femininity. Having made her name above all through her participation in the 2005 Venice Biennale, she was active in Italy last year on two important occasions: when representing Portugal in the recent Biennale, and with her personal exhibition at the Gucci Museum in Florence. As we await her next appearance in Italy, until April 2014 her latest installation can be admired in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

 

L’artista Joana Vasconcelos, parigina di origine portoghese, gioca con la tradizione per proporre una riflessione sugli stereotipi di genere sessuale, di classe sociale e di nazionalità. Le sue opere, a cavallo tra il ready-made duchampiano e il fuoriscala pop, attingono dal catalogo della tradizione decorativa portoghese, riproponendola in chiave ironica e reinventandone l’identità, soprattutto per quanto concerne i paradigmi del genere femminile. Resa famosa dalla sua partecipazione alla Biennale di Venezia del 2005, lo scorso anno l’artista è stata presente in Italia in due occasioni: come rappresentante del portogallo all’ultima Biennale d’arte e con una mostra personale presso il Museo Gucci di Firenze. Aspettando il suo prossimo passaggio in penisola, fino al prossimo aprile sarà possibile ammirare la sua ultima installazione presso il Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Armed with Art, ANNA GOODSON

Anna Goodson runs the well-known illustration agency of the same name. She is currently promoting an unusual artistic campaign focused on civil rights awareness. This was launched in the run-up to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, with the collaboration of numerous creative artists, and aims to draw attention to the kind of discrimination which the Russian government has sadly encouraged in recent years. Goodson explains her intentions thus: “We believe that art communicates more powerfully than words, and we are trying to show the world that our agency and its illustrators don’t agree with discrimination or violence of any kind, whether concerning religion, race or sexual orientation.

 

Anna Goodson, titolare dell’omonima agenzia d’illustrazione, è la promotrice di un’insolita campagna artistica di sensibilizzazione ai diritti civili: lanciata alla vigilia dei Giochi Olimpici invernali di Sochi 2014 e realizzata da un folto numero di creativi, la campagna intende attirare l’attenzione sulle discriminazioni di cui il governo russo si è tristemente fatto portatore negli ultimi anni.Così la Goodson racconta le proprie intenzioni: ”Crediamo che l’arte comunichi con più efficacia delle parole e abbiamo voluto mostrare al mondo che la nostra agenzia e gli illustratori non sono d’accordo con la discriminazione e la violenza di qualunque tipo, indipendentemente dalla religione, dalla razza o dall’ orientamento sessuale.”

Art Basel, MARGIELA+SWAROVSKY

As part of the Art Basel Miami event, Stalker, a highly original promotional installation, provides confirmation of the successful collaboration between Maison Margiela, Atelier Swarovski and Baptiste Debombourg, the exceptionally inventive French artist. The Stalker installation was created in the Margiela boutique in Miami’s design district, and was inspired by Crystalactite, the collection of innovative jewellery created using a new crystal fusion technique, proposed by the two internationally renowned brands. To heighten the visual impact, Debombourg has inundated the boutique with a cascade of layered broken glass that invades its spaces and furnishings with a crystalline flow of poetry.

 

In occasione di Art Basel Miami, Stalker, un insolita installazione promozionale, conferma il successo della collaborazione tra Maison Margiela, Atelier Swarovski e Baptiste Debombourg, artista francese dalle mille risorse. L’installazione, realizzata negli spazi della boutique Margiela al design district di Miami, si ispira a Crystalactite: una collezione di gioielli creati grazie ad un’innovativa tecnica di fusione e proposta dai due marchi di fama internazionale. Per esaltarne l’impatto, Debombourg ha scelto di inondare gli spazi della boutique con una cascata di frantumi di vetro stratificati, che ne invadono le superfici e gli arredi in un cristallino flutto di poesia.
