Waldorf Astoria is a name with an aura indelibly impressed in the collective consciousness, appearing in countless books and films as a symbol of luxury and intriguing mystique. This year it has cropped up among the finalists of the European Hotel Design Awards, in the Adaptive Re-use category. The fledgling Dutch branch was inaugurated last May beside Amsterdam’s Herengracht canal, and immediately stood out not only for the exclusive services offered to its guests but also for its setting. It is housed inside a whole row of six very different buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, each featuring its own architectonic treasures, such as the trompe l‘oeil frescos by the rococo artist Jacob Maurer or the majestic staircase designed by the French architect Daniel Marot, and many other sublime period features which the GA Design studio has cleverly integrated with elegantly sober contemporary additions and with furnishings inspired by local craft traditions. On top of its guest facilities, the hotel also boasts an indoor swimming pool (very much a rarity in Amsterdam), a Michelin Three Star restaurant and a Guerlain Spa. Meanwhile, the ample garden in the rear is partly occupied by a series of beehives dedicated to producing the hotel’s own honey supply. Another legend? The only way to find out is to go there personally.

 

Waldorf Astoria è un nome impresso nell’immaginario comune: ritorna spesso in romanzesche fantasie intrise di lusso e di intrigo; ritorna, quest’anno, tra i finalisti favoriti degli imminenti European Hotel Design Awards, per la categoria “adaptive re-use”. La neonata succursale olandese infatti, inaugurata lo scorso maggio sull’Herengracht di Amsterdam, si è fatta subito notare, oltre che per gli esclusivi servizi offerti ai propri ospiti, per l’inedita location. L’albergo è ospitato all’interno di una schiera composta da sei diversi edifici risalenti al XVII e al XVIII secolo, ciascuno caratterizzato da specifici tesori architettonici, come la sala affrescata a trompe l‘oeil dall’artista rococò Jacob Maurer o la maestosa scalinata progettata dall’architetto francese Daniel Marot. Dettagli che lo studio GA Design, incaricato della riconversione, ha saputo ben integrare con innesti contemporanei eleganti e misurati e con richiami alla tradizione manifatturiera locale. Oltre agli spazi privati, il caseggiato ospita una piscina interna (una vera rarità per la città), un ristorante da tre stelle Michelin ed la spa Guerlain; l’ampio giardino sul retro infine sarebbe in parte adibito ad allevamento di api, per la produzione interna del miele… Un’altra leggenda? L’unico modo per scoprirlo è andarci di persona.
