In the wake of the great Tsunami, the directors of the Lucerne Music Festival wondered – like so many others – what they should do to help survivors from the disaster. Judging by their actions, their answer was “we should do what we do best: bring them our music!” That may seem an obvious enough answer, but their solution to the many problems involved was unpredictable in the extreme: to build a huge inflatable concert hall. This was designed – by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and the Indian artist Anish Kapoor – to contain up to five hundred spectators and to be capable of moving easily from one place to another, just like the art it contains. The project was given the name Ark Nova, evoking the biblical vessel, but this ark, instead of animals, contains a message of hope in a universal language… music.

 

All’indomani dello Tsunami, i responsabili del Festival Musicale di Lucerna si sono domandati, come tanti, cosa fossero in grado di fare per i popoli colpiti dal disastro: ciò che sappiamo fare meglio – sembra si siano detti – portare la nostra musica in quei territori! Se la risposta può apparire ovvia, la soluzione adottata non lo è certo altrettanto: un’immenso auditorium gonfiabile progettato dall’architetto giapponese Arata Isozaki e dall’artista di origine indiana Anish Kapoor, capace di ospitare fino a cinquecento spettatori e di viaggiare agilmente da una meta all’altra, esattamente come l’arte che promuove. Il progetto, denominato Ark Nova con riferimento alla celebre arca biblica, non trasporta animali ma un messaggio di salvezza enunciato in un linguaggio, quello musicale, universalmente condiviso.
