The prolific relationship between artists and restaurants has roots that go back centuries, reminding us of penniless Bohemians and frugal taverns. And the tradition has many high-flying descendants today. A much talked-about example can be seen in Sketch, a multi-space restaurant at 9 Conduit Street in London, founded by Mourad Mazouz in 2002 and overseen by the many-starred French chef Pierre Gagnaire. Already renowned for the previous project designed by artist Martin Creed in 2011, and for the presence of “the best toilets in London”, this year Sketch has had its Gallery Restaurant redesigned by a formidable pair of stylists: the designer India Mahdhavi and the artist David Shrigley. The former contributes the surreal and rather Wes Anderson-style atmosphere which emanates from the strange-toned pink walls and ceiling, the suffused light from the brass lamps, the padded velvet armchair seating on the outspoken mosaic floor (flooring inherited from the previous “impermanent installation” by Creed, made up of ninety-six different kinds of marble). In deliberate contrast to this luxuriant design, Shrigley has lined the walls with two hundred and thirty-nine exaggeratedly simply framed pictures: quirky almost childish monochrome sketches and texts that offer fragmentary pungent satirical glances at ordinary human foibles. Shrigley has extended the same attitude from the walls onto the tableware, contributing ironic black designs and writing for the set of white porcelain bone china specially commissioned from the prestigious English company Caverswall… which the tongue-in-cheek Glasgow artist describes as “the first artwork designed for the dishwasher: an extremely clean work of art!”

 

Il rapporto di sintonia che lega artisti e ristoranti ha radici lontane, intrise del profumo di storie romantiche che parlano di squattrinati bohémien e di taverne frugali. Eppure si tratta di una tradizione che conta numerosi (ed altolocati) discendenti. Tra questi l’ultimo a far parlare di sé è il ristorante londinese Sketch, al numero 9 di Conduit Street, fondato da Mourad Mazouz nel 2002 e condotto dallo chef francese pluristellato Pierre Gagnaire. Già famoso per l’allestimento studiato nel 2011 dall’artista Martin Creed e per la presenza di quella che alcuni hanno nominato “la miglior toilette di Londra”, quest’anno lo Sketch ha rinnovato i propri locali affidando l’intervento ad una coppia di stylist d’eccellenza: la designer India Mahdhavi e l’artista David Shrigley. La prima è responsabile dell’atmosfera surreale e “andersoniana” che emana dalle pareti rosa, dalla luce soffusa delle lampade di ottone e dalle poltroncine di velluto imbottito fiorite sulla pavimentazione a mosaico (un residuo del vecchio allestimento ottenuto dalla composizione di novantasei diverse tipologie di marmo). Da parte sua, l’artista di Glasgow si è invece occupato della creazione delle duecentotrentanove tavole illustrate che oggi ricoprono ogni superficie verticale della sala principale: disegni dai tratti essenziali e monocromatici che investono di satira pungente scene di comune quotidianità. Inoltre, Shrigley ha progettato anche una serie di ironici, quanto sopraffini, elementi da tavola in porcellana bone china prodotti dalla storica azienda inglese Caverswall: come sostiene sarcasticamente lo stesso artista “la prima opera d’arte ad andare in lavastoviglie… un opera d’arte molto pulita!”.
