Paris recovers an unforgettable fragment of its history: the Les Bains nightclub reopens, after four years of intensive restructuring. This locale was first launched in 1885 by the Guerbois family, designed by the famous architect Eugène Ewald, as an ultra-fashionable bathhouse, frequented by Marcel Proust among others. A century later it had become an exclusive light-night clubbing icon: during the crazy eighties and the naughty nineties it was a mecca for stars and would-be’s, attracting the most transgressive and spotlight-hungry international artistes, from Andy Warhol to Grace Jones, David Bowie to Robert de Niro, and the Sex Pistols to the Rolling Stones. In 2011 it closed and now it finally reopens, owned by the film director and producer Jean-Pierre Marois. The historic parts have been beautifully restored and a series of new spaces and functions added: 39 elegantly furnished bedrooms, a bar that looks like something from a David Lynch film, a restaurant run by an outstanding couple (Lars Krueger as Artistic Director, with chef Michael Riss in the kitchen), a wellbeing centre and a boutique. A new experience for nostalgics!

Il locale, fondato nel 1885 dalla famiglia Guerbois e costruito dal famoso architetto Eugène Ewald, ha rappresentato una pietra miliare nella storia del costume degli anni Ottanta e Novanta: club esclusivo e mecca delle star, tra le sue pareti si sono avvicendati i nomi più trasgressivi del panorama artistico di quegli anni, da Andy Warhol a Grace Jones, da David Bowie a Robert de Niro, dai Sex Pistols ai Rolling Stones. Costretto a chiudere nel 2011, oggi il complesso riapre per iniziativa del regista Jean-Pierre Marois. Al restauro delle parti storiche si affiancano nuovi locali per nuove funzioni: 39 camere elegantemente arredate, un bar degno di un set di David Lynch, un ristorante diretto da una coppia d’eccezione (Lars Krueger alla direzione artistica e lo chef Michael Riss ai fornelli), un centro benessere e una boutique. Un’esperienza tutta nuova per inguaribili nostalgici!
Collaborations between Fashion and Music have become almost the norm… but when those involved happen to be two of the most unusual and yet representative landmarks of their respective fields, we can count on an astonishing outcome. This is certainly the situation with the extraordinary collaboration between two English one-off creators: Sir Paul Smith and the White Duke, David Bowie. For the release of the singer’s latest album, The Next Day, Smith has designed the look of a series of autographed limited edition vinyl versions: eighty translucent ruby red copies, for sale on the websites of Paul Smith, Selfridges and the Nottingham Music Exchange. However, since most collaborations are two-way affairs, the designer’s contribution to the record design is balanced by the creation of a series of official Bowie T-shirts designed by the artist Jonathan Barnbrook and printed on natural cotton, with the handwritten dedication ”Paul Smith for David Bowie”. The designer, delighted with this collaboration, has enthusiastically announced other joint projects between the two before the year is out. Whetting our curiosity, to put it mildly!

E’ questo il caso della felice collaborazione tra due star inglesi di indiscusso successo: sir Paul Smith e il duca bianco David Bowie. In occasione dell’uscita dell’ultimo album del cantante, The Next Day, lo stilista inglese ha curato il look di una serie di vinili autografati in edizione limitata: ottanta copie traslucide di colore rosso rubino, in vendita sul sito di Paul Smith, su Selfridges e Nottingham Music Exchange. Ma visto che una collaborazione che si rispetti non è completa senza che avvenga uno scambio reciproco, l’incursione dello stilista in campo musicale è stata contraccambiata dalla realizzazione di una serie di T-shirt ufficiali disegnate dall’artista Jonathan Barnbrook e stampate su cotone naturale, che riportano la semplice scritta ”Paul Smith for David Bowie”.
