Peddy Mergui is a Moroccan-born artist and designer transplanted to Israel, but what has attracted worldwide attention to his work has been his recently concluded exhibition in the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco. As an expert on marketing strategies, Mergui has created his Wheat is Wheat is Wheat project as a refined exercise in style that sets out to “clothe” a series of basic food industry products with packaging apparently designed by the most famous fashion houses (and other fashionable luxury suppliers). The result is amazingly life-like, featuring among others iMilk by Apple, Prada flour, Louis Vuitton salami, Tiffany yoghurt and Versace eggs, each with packaging whose every detail is faithful to the aesthetic and stylistic characteristics of its international brand image. An appealing and amusing exercise which is also a challenging invitation to reflect on the nature and the power of image marketing.

Esperto conoscitore delle strategie di marketing, con il progetto Wheat is Wheat is Wheat Mergui ha elaborato un raffinato esercizio di stile che prevede di “vestire” una serie di prodotti di base dell’industria alimentare con abiti firmati dalle più rinomate aziende di moda (e non solo). Il risultato è stupefacentemente verosimile: sono nati così, tra gli altri, l’iMilk di Apple, la farina Prada, i salami Louis Vuitton, lo yogurt Tiffany e le uova Versace, tutti perfettamente aderenti ai principi estetici che identificano i suddetti brand sul mercato internazionale. Un esercizio dall’esito accattivante e divertente, che è anche un richiamo a riflettere sul potere dell’immagine.
Catherine Martin is no stranger to the red carpet: so far her creations have won her five Academy Awards and one BAFTA, as well as dozens of other prizes. Her latest triumph bears the date 2 March 2014, when she won the Oscar for her costumes for The Great Gatsby. Her partnership with the Australian director Baz Luhrmann, the film’s driving creative force, goes beyond the professional sphere: the two have been married since 1997, and ever since – with reciprocal admiration – have been interweaving phenomenal storytelling with supreme costume design, their prize-winning creations including Moulin Rouge and Australia, with Nicole Kidman, and Romeo+Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio. Catherine’s film projects have led to her notching up a number of high-profile collaborations with fashion brands, such as Miuccia Prada (for The Great Gatsby) and Karl Lagerfield, but her design activities also include creating elegant collections of furnishing fabrics.

L’ultimo successo professionale risale alla magica notte del 2 marzo 2014, quando la designer ha ottenuto l’Oscar per i migliori costumi con il film Il Grande Gatsby. Il sodalizio con il regista australiano Baz Luhrmann, artefice della pellicola, non è solo di natura professionale: i due sono infatti sposati dal 1997 e da allora hanno intrecciano con reciproca ammirazione storie fantastiche e di inequiparabile fattura sartoriale (per citare solo alcuni dei successi premiati della coppia, ricordiamo Moulin Rouge e Australia, con Nicole Kidman, e Romeo+Juliet con Leonardo DiCaprio). L’impegno cinematografico di Catherine l’ha portata a collezionare una serie di importanti collaborazioni con grandi marchi della moda, come Miuccia Prada (proprio in occasione de Il Grande Gatsby) e Karl Lagerfeld; tuttavia la sua attività di designer prosegue oltre la scena, con eleganti collezioni di tessili per l’arredo.
