There’s still time until the 15th of March to admire the wide-ranging retrospective on show in Somerset House in London celebrating the work of Guy Bourdin. The exhibition – titled Guy Bourdin: Image Maker and curated by Alistair O’Neill with Shelly Verthime – contains over a hundred original prints and a large amount of unpublished material (including paintings, notes and a Super8 film) created by the highly original French photographer specialized in fashion subjects. As can be seen from the photos displayed, two durable collaborations in particular played key roles in this photographic artist’s professional growth: that with Vogue Paris (beginning in 1955, and flourishing above all in the 1970s when Francine Crescent was editor), and that with the footwear brand Charles Jourdan, for whom Bourdin created images which were strikingly provoking and erotic, but always with a surreal tone. Bourdin’s art constructs images where the fashion product is just one among various shapes and forms that are orchestrated to narrate mysterious and intriguing stories.

 

C’è ancora tempo fino al 15 marzo per ammirare l’ampia retrospettiva allestita presso la Somerset House di Londra per celebrare l’opera di Guy Bourdin. Guy Bourdin: Image Maker, questo il titolo dell’esposizione curata da Alistair O’Neill con Shelly Verthime, mette in mostra più di un centinaio di stampe originali ed un folto numero di materiali inediti (tra cui dipinti, appunti ed un filmato Super8) dell’innovativo fotografo di moda francese. Come testimoniato dalle opera in mostra, due furono le collaborazioni che segnarono maggiormente la crescita professionale dell’artista: quella con Vogue Paris (con cui Bourdin iniziò a collaborare nel 1955, per poi ottenere pieno risalto negli anni Settanta, sotto la direzione di Francine Crescent) e quella con il marchio di calzature Charles Jourdan, per il quale l’artista sviluppò immagini provocanti ed erotiche, dal forte carattere surrealista. L’arte di Bourdin costruisce immagini, nelle quali il prodotto è solo uno dei tanti elementi formali che assecondano la narrazione di storie misteriose ed intriganti.
