The new Miu Miu store, designed by Herzog and De Meuron, was inaugurated last month in Tokyo’s Ayoama district. The two Swiss architects had previously designed the spectacular Epicenter Prada, just across the road from the new building, but here they have opted for something simpler but also more innovative, in tune with the peculiarity of a brand as individualistic and daring as Miuccia Prada’s more personalized enterprise. The new building catches the eye not for its extravagance but for its mysteriously elegant discretion, and one original invention in particular: two of the perimeter walls that make up this two-storied stainless steel box have been designed to hinge out away from the main vertical volume, as though hiding the building but also attracting the eye to the ground floor show windows. The inner lining of these giant “flaps” consists of polished perforated copper, and offers intriguing warm reflections in the store’s facing glass. The same material recurs frequently in the ravishingly stylish interior, conceived to welcome customers with relaxed panache.
Ha inaugurato lo scorso mese nel quartiere di Ayoama il nuovo store Miu Miu, progettato da Herzog e De Meuron. I due architetti svizzeri, già artefici dell’Epicenter Prada, che sorge a pochi passi dalla nuova costruzione, hanno voluto creare per l’occasione qualcosa di totalmente innovativo, per assecondare la peculiarità di un marchio autonomo ed intraprendente come quello capitanato da Miuccia Prada. Il nuovo immobile si impone all’attenzione del passante non per il suo sfarzo, quanto piuttosto per un gesto progettuale di delicata eleganza: due dei lembi perimetrali che costituiscono questa scatola a due piani in acciaio inox sono stati discostati dal volume originario, a creare una copertura pensile che accompagna lo sguardo verso la vetrina dello store; il loro rivestimento offre intriganti effetti luminosi grazie all’impiego del rame traforato, lo stesso materiale che ritroviamo a più riprese negli arredi, appositamente progettati per accogliere i clienti in un clima di briosa rilassatezza.
Although not scheduled to be finished until 2016, strollers in Tribeca can already make out in today’s striking skeleton the future form of 56 Leonard, the skyscraper designed by the Swiss studio Herzog & De Meuron. The building will eventually house 145 luxury units on 60 floors, all of them boasting stunning views of mid-town Manhattan, thanks to a system of glass curtain walls containing the internal volumes while creating surprising interactions between exterior and interior. The apartments will feature unusually high ceilings and large areas (from over 400 to almost 2,000 square metres) and interior furnishing features designed by the same architects. Despite its monumental dimensions, this building is a highly unorthodox skyscraper, due especially to the way each story looks stacked on top of another in a seemingly random fashion, each out of axis with its neighbours, with planes and corners jutting out unpredictably: this creates a strikingly dynamic aesthetic effect while at the same time offering all kinds of terraces and overhanging interiors to different apartments. Once completed, the building will be embellished by a site-specific sculpture by Anish Kapoor, consisting of a huge and apparently weightless reflective steel bubble at ground level, squeezed beneath the overhanging cement of the first floor beside the main entrance.
Sebbene il suo completamento sia previsto solo nel 2016, passeggiando per Tribeca è già possibile intravedere attraverso il suo scheletro il futuro del 56 Leonard, il grattacielo progettato dallo studio svizzero Herzog & De Meuron. L’edificio ospiterà 145 unità di lusso distribuite su 60 piani di altezza, dalle quali sarà possibile godere di un’incredibile vista su mid-town Manhattan, grazie al sistema di curtain walls vetrate che racchiudono i volumi interni creando un sorprendente gioco di interazioni tra l’esterno e l’interno dell’edificio. Gli appartamenti, caratterizzati dall’inusuale altezza dei soffitti e dalle ampie metrature (dagli oltre 400 ai quasi 2000 metri quadrati), sono completati da arredi interni specificatamente studiati dagli stessi architetti. A dispetto della sua monumentalità, l’opera si sottrae alla comune definizione di grattacielo grazie ad un andamento ritmico tutt’altro che monolitico: i piani disassati creano infatti volumi fortemente aggettanti che determinano un piacevole effetto estetico, mentre dal punto di vista funzionale dotano le unità di terrazze e volumi interni a sbalzo. Una volta completato, l’immobile sarà arricchito da una scultura site-specific ideata dall’artista Anish Kapoor: una bolla di acciaio riflettente apparentemente priva di peso compressa dalla sovrastante soletta in cemento che segnalerà l’ingresso al livello stradale.
Conceptions of space: recent acquisitions in contemporary architecture will remain on display in the exhibition rooms of MoMA until mid-October. This superb Museum offers visitors the opportunity to view new acquisitions for its architectural section in an exhibition curated by Pedro Gadanho, constructed around the conception of space as evolved from the beginning of the 20th century until today, in an era which Michel Foucault described as “the era of space”. On display are twenty major international projects (among the architects, Herzog & de Meuron, Álvaro Siza and Kengo Kuma, but also new names such as Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Ryue Nishizawa, Ensamble Studio, SO-IL and MOS Architects). Each one is presented to the public through scale models, drawings and designs, photos, videos and life-sized reconstructions… spaces, that tell the story of spaces, in space.
Conceptions of space: recent acquisitions in contemporary architecture sarà visitabile, nelle sale del MoMA, fino alla metà di ottobre. Il tempio dell’arte statunitense offre ai suoi visitatori l’opportunità di ammirare le più recenti acquisizioni della sezione architettura con una mostra, curata da Pedro Gadanho, completamente costruita attorno alla concezione dello spazio, così come essa si è costituita dall’inizio del XX secolo ad oggi, nell’era che Michel Foucault definì appunto “l’epoca dello spazio”. In questa occasione saranno esposti venti progetti internazionali (tra gli altri Herzog & de Meuron, Álvaro Siza e Kengo Kuma, ma anche nomi inediti come Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Ryue Nishizawa, Ensamble Studio, SO-IL e MOS Architects), presentati al pubblico tramite modelli, disegni, fotografie, video e ricostruzioni in scala reale… spazi, che raccontano di spazi, nello spazio.
