Dogo Onsen is an ancient hot springs complex in the city of Matsuyama, on the island of Shikoku. The folkloric atmosphere that normally characterizes Dogo Onsen was a source of inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki’s animated fantasy film, Spirited Away. This year, to celebrate the 120th Anniversary of its main spa resort, a bevy of well-known artists have been commissioned to make their design contributions to rooms in nine locations in the area (Traditional Hotels and Ryokan Inns), as part of the Hotel Horizontal project, one of the key installation events of the Dogo Onsen Art 2014 Festival. Photographers, poets and painters have expended their ingenuity and art on the redecoration of communal spaces and guest rooms, which will remain available as accommodation for guests at the cost of 550 Euros a night until January 2015. Those lucky enough to be able to visit the city during the Festival and attend its some of its numerous events will thus be able to spend their nights in highly original settings such as photographer Nuboyoshi Araki’s room with bondage images of women in traditional kimonos, or the blizzard of polka dots in the room designed by the artist Yayoi Kusama.

Il folklore che lo caratterizza è stato fonte d’ispirazione per la realizzazione del film d’animazione di Hayao Miyazaki, Spirited Away. Quest’anno, per celebrare il 120° anniversario dello storico edificio termale, una vasta e rinomata schiera d’artisti è stata chiamata ad intervenire su nove location limitrofe (hotel e ryokan
tradizionali) nell’ambito del progetto Hotel Orizzontale, uno tra gli eventi di spicco del Dogo Onsen Art 2014 Festival. Fotografi, poeti e pittori hanno prestato il proprio ingegno e la propria opera alla riqualificazione di stanze ed ambienti comuni che saranno usufruibili dai visitatori fino al gennaio 2015 al costo di 550 euro per notte. I fortunati che prenderanno parte alla manifestazione, oltre a godere dei numerosi eventi in programma, potranno così pernottare, ad esempio, tra le donne in kimono tradizionale del fotografo Nuboyoshi Araki, o addormentarsi sotto una pioggia di vivaci pois nella stanza progettata dall’artista Yayoi Kusama.

Nendo never sleeps, or so one suspects… The renowned design studio based in Tokyo has launched a whole series of new international projects for 2014. These include – for the third year in a row – a collaboration with the imaginative Spanish shoe label Camper. Having already designed the Camper monobrand showrooms – inventing the two inspirational concepts “the shoes that walk freed through the air” and the “pelota shoe” – Nendo now creates a series of shoes that revisit the traditional Beetle model, beautifying the surface by a simple and elegant design gesture: the pierced holes expand and the laces interweave, combining functional and decorative value. A lesson in simplicity from masterful and typically Japanese design.

Nendo non dorme mai, almeno così si sospetta… Il famoso studio di design, con sede a Tokyo, ha inaugurato il 2014 con una fitta serie di nuovi progetti di respiro internazionale. Tra gli altri, Nendo ha rinsaldato, per il terzo anno consecutivo, la collaborazione con la nota azienda di calzature spagnola Camper. Già artefice degli showroom monomarca, per i quali aveva ideato i due concept ispirazionali “scarpe che camminano libere nell’aria” e “scarpa pelota”, oggi Nendo firma una serie di calzature che rivisitano il tradizionale modello Beetle impreziosendone la superficie attraverso un semplice ed elegante gesto progettuale: il traforo si espande e l’elemento laccio si intreccia, coniugando gli aspetti funzionali e quelli decorativi. Una lezione di semplicità per un approccio al design magistrale e tipicamente nipponico.
