Last month saw the opening of a memorable exhibition devoted to the enfant terrible of French fashion, featuring a stunning setting: Jean Paul Gaultier at the Grand Palais in Paris. The exhibition – which will run until next August – displays 175 different outfits designed by the eccentric designer between 1970 and 2013, embracing both Haute Couture and Ready to wear, as well as a huge treasure-trove of stage costumes, archive documents and videos. Numerous other artists are also involved in the exhibition-cum-show, including UBU, an avant-garde theatre company, which has applied its talent to animating the mannequins displayed along the exhibition itinerary (thanks to an innovative technology). Not a show to confine itself to home territory: as soon as it closes in Paris, off it goes to Dallas, San Francisco, New York, Melbourne, London and Madrid.

Ha aperto i battenti lo scorso mese in una cornice di straordinario fascino la mostra dedicata all’eterno enfant terrible della moda francese: al Grand Palais va in scena Jean Paul Gaultier. L’esposizione, visitabile fino al prossimo agosto, raccoglie 175 outfit disegnati dall’eccentrico stilista tra il 1970 e il 2013, tra haute couture e ready to wear, oltre ad un vasto patrimonio composto da costumi di scena, documenti d’archivio e filmati. Numerosi anche gli artisti che hanno preso parte al programma, a partire dalla compagnia teatrale avanguardista UBU, che ha prestato il proprio talento all’animazione dei manichini esposti lungo il percorso allestitivo (resa possibile grazie all’utilizzo di una tecnologia innovativa). Lo show non intende fermarsi entro i confini nazionali: appena disallestita la mostra partirà per approdare a Dallas, San Francisco, New York, Melbourne, Londra e Madrid.

Refined, lightweight, exotic, elegant, spiritual, romantic, provoking… feathers have featured timelessly in fashion, always acquiring now shades of significance and invoking new visions. Feathers are the focus of the exhibition Birds of Paradise – Plumes and Feathers in Fashion, currently on display at MoMu – the Antwerp Museum of Fashion – and remaining on display until next spring. The items include extravagant creations by great fashion names from yesterday and today, including Alexander McQueen, Dries Van Noten, Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Balenciaga, Prada and Gucci. A special spotlight picks out the mythical Maison Lemarié, a Parisian company specialized in preparing feathers for haute couture since 1880. Whether as symbols of sophisticated wealth or as synonyms of nature and freedom – as the curators Karen Van Godtsenhoven and Wim Merte point out – feathers are forever fluttering on fashion’s catwalks, yet they never lose their ability to astonish, stimulate and enchant.

Raffinate, leggere, esotiche, eleganti, spirituali, romantiche, provocanti… le piume hanno adornato la moda, passata e presente, acquisendo mille sfumature di significato ed evocando di volta in volta visioni di mondi diversi. A loro è dedicata l’esposizione Birds of Paradise – Plumes and Feathers in Fashion, allestita presso il The Bowes Museum di Barnard Castle in collaborazione con il MoMu – Museo della Moda di Anversa, visitabile fino alla prossima primavera. In mostra le più stravaganti creazioni dei maggiori nomi della moda di ieri e di oggi: tra gli altri, Alexander McQueen, Dries Van Noten, Jean Paul Gaultier , Thierry Mugler, Balenciaga, Prada e Gucci. Sopra a tutti, spunta poi il nome della mitica Maison Lemarié, azienda parigina specializzata nella lavorazione artigianale delle piume per l’alta moda fin dal 1880. Da simbolo di raffinata ricchezza a sinonimo di libertà, come sostengono i curatori Karen Van Godtsenhoven e Wim Mertens, le piume non smettono di planare sulle passerelle, instillando ogni volta un rinnovato ed incantevole stupore.
