Take one media artist with a fixation on fashion and one avant-garde publisher, add a handful of young designers with multifaceted poetic perspectives and sprinkle generously with fashion’s ability to invent powerful images… and you have a high impact recipe for a style exercise that projects itself from the imaginary away into the otherworldly. Otherworldly – the title of this volume published by Gestalten Verlag in February 2016, curated by the artist T. M. Lexileictous – is a collection of photos of clothing and accessories that turn their backs on conventional fashion. The book was conceived with aim of stimulating and inspiring fashion sector professionals, but has actually fascinated readers from a far wider and more varied field, provoking variegated reflections on the underlying nature of fashion. Despite the extreme contrasts in vision and style between the different young designers whose work is seen here, they all share a view of fashion as a kind of performance game with the ability to transform the human body, proposing wearable sculptures and extreme dramatic images, and inhabiting a point of convergence between high quality handcrafting expertise and digital technology. A gallery of possible metamorphoses that challenges the aesthetic cannons of beauty imposed by collective orthodoxy.
