Collaborations between Fashion and Music have become almost the norm… but when those involved happen to be two of the most unusual and yet representative landmarks of their respective fields, we can count on an astonishing outcome. This is certainly the situation with the extraordinary collaboration between two English one-off creators: Sir Paul Smith and the White Duke, David Bowie. For the release of the singer’s latest album, The Next Day, Smith has designed the look of a series of autographed limited edition vinyl versions: eighty translucent ruby red copies, for sale on the websites of Paul Smith, Selfridges and the Nottingham Music Exchange. However, since most collaborations are two-way affairs, the designer’s contribution to the record design is balanced by the creation of a series of official Bowie T-shirts designed by the artist Jonathan Barnbrook and printed on natural cotton, with the handwritten dedication ”Paul Smith for David Bowie”. The designer, delighted with this collaboration, has enthusiastically announced other joint projects between the two before the year is out. Whetting our curiosity, to put it mildly!

Moda e musica ci hanno ormai abituati alle collaborazioni comuni, ma se a scendere in campo sono due dei più rappresentativi ed iconici sovrani di questi due mondi, allora il risultato è strabiliante. E’ questo il caso della felice collaborazione tra due star inglesi di indiscusso successo: sir Paul Smith e il duca bianco David Bowie. In occasione dell’uscita dell’ultimo album del cantante, The Next Day, lo stilista inglese ha curato il look di una serie di vinili autografati in edizione limitata: ottanta copie traslucide di colore rosso rubino, in vendita sul sito di Paul Smith, su Selfridges e Nottingham Music Exchange. Ma visto che una collaborazione che si rispetti non è completa senza che avvenga uno scambio reciproco, l’incursione dello stilista in campo musicale è stata contraccambiata dalla realizzazione di una serie di T-shirt ufficiali disegnate dall’artista Jonathan Barnbrook e stampate su cotone naturale, che riportano la semplice scritta ”Paul Smith for David Bowie”. Lo stilista, entusiasta della collaborazione, preannuncia altri progetti comuni entro la fine dell’anno. Attendiamo curiosi!

Ladies and gentlemen, curtain up on… Sir Paul Smith! The exhibition curated by Donna Loveday, flashbacks across the forty years that have made the brand famous the world over, starting from the first makeshift showroom improvised in a Parisian hotel room, where young Paul laid out his first collection on a bed. This room is meticulously reconstructed as part of the exhibition, as is the famous atelier-workshop in Covent Garden, and also the very first Paul Smith boutique… plus, of course, an extraordinary array of clothes from across the years, the sum of which has revolutionized our perception of fashion.

Il Design Museum di Londra, mecca degli appassionati del settore, dedica una mostra ad uno dei più celebri stilisti del Paese e del mondo, colui che con genio creativo ed imprendidtoriale ha trasformato la moda maschile made in UK. Signore e signori, va in scena: Sir Paul Smith. La personale, curata da Donna Loveday, ripercorre i quarant’anni che hanno reso celebre il marchio nel mondo, a partire da quel primo showroom allestito in una stanza d’albergo parigina in cui il giovane Paul aveva steso sul letto la sua prima collezione; una stanza interamente ricostruita all’interno del percorso museale, dove è possibile ammirare anche lo studio-laboratorio di Covent Garden e il primo negozio monomarca, oltre ad una straordinaria collezione di abiti che hanno rivoluzionato il nostro modo di vivere la moda.
