The works of the United States artist Chris Maynard pay tribute to the battle to protect endangered wildlife, expressed in exquisitely delicate poetic forms. Chris makes art from feathers. He produces tiny designs by cutting out parts of his fragile material, each featuring its own surprising natural pattern, and then arranging compositions of these and smaller feathered fragments against neutral backgrounds in shadow-boxes, greatly increasing the dramatic and pictorial impact. This process involves the use of surgical instruments, along with incredible patience and precision. The concept behind these operations is underlined by the correspondence between subject and substance: peacock feathers are used to depict peacocks, hummingbird feathers to depict hummingbirds, and so on (using exclusively feathers fallen naturally from perfectly healthy birds!). Examples of his work can be seen in his book published last year by Aviva Publishing, titled Feathers, form & functions.
