The legendary French luxury brand Hermès commissioned Dutch artist Levi Van Veluw to visually reinterpret its relationship with the Orient in an installation for its Shanghai store’s window displays. The result is an extraordinary series of evocative images whose narrative style and sublime artisan skill are reminiscent of ancient stained-glass windows. The three triptych-like displays contain beautifully coloured and executed wooden sculptures which suggest three stages of a journey made by a magnificent epic equine creature towards the marvels of the Orient: in the first image, the journey’s beginning is suggested by a nervously cluttered European room that has just been abandoned, in the second, the horse is seen revelling in the freedom of an exotic setting, while the third depicts its arrival in China bearing numerous precious Hermès gifts. And so the Dutch artist projects his extraordinary vision of the ancient brand of horse-riding accessories and its present-day metamorphosis into a symbol of global luxury.

 

L’artista olandese Levi Van Veluw è stato incaricato dal leggendario marchio francese Hermès di reinterpretare il rapporto tra la maison di moda e l’Oriente  nell’esecuzione dell’allestimento per le sue vetrine a Shangai. Il risultato è una serie di ambientazioni che, per sviluppo narrativo e per perizia artigianale, ricordano la sacralità di antiche vetrate policrome. Le tre vetrine, allestite con sculture lignee di incantevole impatto, raccontano le tre tappe del viaggio di un vigoroso esemplare equino verso le meraviglie dell’Oriente: nella prima la maestosa creatura intraprende il proprio viaggio lasciandosi alle spalle lo scompiglio di un interno abbandonato in tutta fretta, mentre la seconda vetrina vede il cavallo avventurarsi in luoghi esotici; nell’ultimo display, infine, si assiste all’arrivo in Cina dell’animale carico di un vasto numero di preziosi doni griffati Hermès. Così l’artista olandese ha scelto di onorare l’antico marchio di accessori per l’equitazione, oggi divenuto culto.
