Tomas Maier, the far-sighted creative director of Bottega Veneta has always been passionately involved in the protection of craft heritage. Currently he features strongly among the supporters of a campaign to preserve Modernist Japanese architecture. The son of an architect, and an impassioned expert on the subject, he has produced a video which uses the elegant and subdued tones of a Zen garden to denounce the demolition of many important buildings from the modernist period: treasures which are further threatened by the approach of the 2020 Olympic Games. In his attempt to spread awareness of the significance of these architectural jewels and the importance of safeguarding them, Maier declares: “For many years I have admired the achievements of Japanese Modernism. Consequently, it greatly saddens me to think that before long many of these fantastic buildings may be lost forever. I hope that Bottega Veneta can contribute to spreading awareness of this problem, because we fervently believe that great design is a timeless treasure. From the perspective of transmitting cultural heritage to the future, it would be a tragedy if future generations were deprived of the chance of admiring the beauty of these buildings at first hand.”

 

Tomas Maier, lungimirante direttore creativo di Bottega Veneta da sempre impegnato nella tutela del patrimonio artigianale, è oggi tra i promotori di un’appassionata campagna in difesa dell’architettura modernista giapponese. Maier, figlio di un architetto ed esperto conoscitore della disciplina, denuncia con un video dai toni eleganti e pacati di un giardino zen, la prematura scomparsa di molti edifici di rilievo risalenti all’epoca modernista: tesori messi ancor più in pericolo dall’imminenza delle Olimpiadi 2020. Nel suo ammirevole tentativo di diffondere la conoscenza di questi tesori e sensibilizzare il pubblico alla loro salvaguardia, Maier sostiene: “Essendo da tempo un ammiratore del Modernismo giapponese, mi rattrista profondamente il pensiero di poter perdere entro breve questi fantastici edifici. Speriamo che Bottega Veneta possa contribuire a promuovere la consapevolezza del problema, perché crediamo che il design di qualità sia senza tempo. Nell’ottica del patrimonio culturale del futuro, sarebbe una grave perdita per le nuove generazioni non poter ammirare in prima persona la bellezza di questi edifici”.
