The London Mondrian Hotel has finally opened its doors to the public. After months of speculation and previews, it is now finally possible to stay in this huge building overlooking the Thames. Designed by Warren Platner in 1978 as a luxury hotel and subsequently converted into an office building, it now returns to its original vocation through a bold interior redesigning project by British designer Tom Dixon. This reconversion is inspired by vintage 1920s transatlantic liner style, given bold new life not only in the hotel itself but also in a series of collateral adjacent spaces with other functions… these include the restaurant run by the internationally renowned chef Seamus Mullen, with a menu offering a revisited blend of traditional British and American cuisines, while next to it, the Dandelyan Bar offers a gentlemanly English mood for excellent cocktails in a space dominated by emerald green marble. In the basement area, the AGUA Bathhouse and Spa offers guests a deeply relaxing pause among curved walls and suffused lighting, while a panoramic rooftop cafeteria offers a stunning view onto the Thames. The guest rooms also strongly provide a contemporary take on vintage marine style, in their compact elegance and curved brass detailing. Ready to set sail?
Mondrian ha finalmente aperto le proprie porte nella capitale britannica. Dopo mesi di anticipazioni è oggi possibile pernottare nell’immenso edificio affacciato sul Tamigi; progettato da Warren Platner nel 1978 come hotel di lusso e poi divenuto sede di uffici, l’immobile ritorna oggi alla sua funzione originaria grazie all’intervento del designer inglese Tom Dixon che ne ha disegnato gli interni. La riconversione, ispirata all’estetica tipica dei transatlantici anni Venti, è intervenuta oltre che negli spazi alberghieri, su una serie di locali adibiti a servizi collaterali. Tra questi il ristorante gestito dallo chef di fama internazionale Seamus Mullen, il cui menù fonde tradizioni culinarie inglesi e statunitensi in chiave rivisitata, mentre il limitrofo bar Dandelyan offre ai genleman inglesi l’opportunità di sorseggiare ottimi cocktail in un ambiente caratterizzato da marmi verde smeraldo. Nel seminterrato la AGUA Bathhouse and Spa regala agli ospiti momenti di assoluto relax tra pareti ricurve e luci soffuse, mentre, ai suoi antipodi, una terrazza panoramica adibita a caffetteria offre una meravigliosa vista sul Tamigi. Le camere infine, sottolineano il richiamo allo stile marittimo, con la loro struttura compatta e i dettagli in ottone ricurvo. Pronti a salpare?
Six years after the project was first announced, the Luois Viutton Foundation has opened the doors of its completed Paris headquarters. Standing in the Jardin d’Acclimation, in the northern part of the Bois de Boulogne, the futuristic structure designed by Frank Gehry asserts itself as a new contemporary art hub, containing a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, as well as an auditorium for performances and events.And so, just while the nearby Centre Pompidou is celebrating his entire career, the Canadian architect offers the world another demonstration of his genius: this building is inspired by the fluid volumes flooded with light typical of late 19th century architecture and is composed of a series of central structures with diamond-like surfaces, wrapped in membranes resembling sails swollen by the wind. In order to construct this vision, 3600 curved panels of glass had to be modelled with millimetric precision, a feat made possible by the employment of a recently developed technique. A visionary project based on latest-generation technological content, an emblematic expression of its own age immediately elevated to iconic status… as only Gehry knows how to do!
A sei anni dal suo annuncio, la Fondazione Louis Vuitton ha aperto le porte della propria sede parigina. Situata all’interno dei Jardin d’Acclimation, nella parte nord del Bois de Boulogne, l’avvenieristica struttura progettata da Frank Gehry si propone come nuovo polo dell’arte contemporanea, sede di una collezione permanente e di esposizioni temporanee, oltre che di un auditorium per performance ed eventi. Così, proprio mentre il vicino Centre Pompidou celebra la sua carriera, l’architetto di origine canadese offre al mondo un’ulteriore prova della sua genialità: la fondazione, ispirata ai volumi fluidi ed irradiati di luce tipici dell’architettura alla fine del XIX secolo, si compone di una serie di corpi centrali dalle superfici diamantate, avvolti da membrane simili a vele plasmate dal vento, per la costruzione delle quali è stato necessario l’impiego di 3600 pannelli di vetro modellati con precisione millimetrica grazie all’ausilio di una tecnica di recente acquisizione. Un progetto visionario e ad alto contenuto tecnologico, interprete della propria epoca ed immediatamente assunto al ruolo di icona, come solo Gehry sa fare!
Renzo Piano has designed the new Parisian headquarters of the Pathé Foundation, and has done so with the architectural imagination and skill that characterizes all his works, which are always somehow extravagant but restrained, alien to their setting yet managing to establish unpredictably successful dialogues with their surroundings. The building will house the historic film archives of Pathé-produced films, act as a promotional and educational center, offer display space for both permanent and temporary exhibitions, as also contain a seventy-seat internal cinema plus offices and document archives. From a formal point of view, the external design solution developed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop consists of a kind of elegant urban blob: a weirdly curvaceous shape pouring up from the ground or down towards it, mostly covered by a glass skin. The shiny inflatable-looking volume nestles between surrounding buildings, dwarfing them but not depriving them of light, and is completed by a birch garden at the rear. Future phases foresee the restoration of the original façade facing onto Avenue des Gobelins, with its beautiful decorative sculptures by the young August Rodin.
Renzo Piano firma il progetto per la nuova sede parigina della Fondazione Pathé e lo fa con la maestria che da sempre contraddistingue le sue opere, stravaganti ma misurate, aliene ma artefici di un dialogo serrato con il tessuto preesistente circostante. L’edificio, al quale sarà affidato il compito di custodire le storiche pellicole della casa cinematografica e fungere da centro promozionale e divulgativo, ospita spazi espositivi per esposizioni permanenti e temporanee, una sala di proiezione da settanta spettatori, gli uffici e l’archivio storico. Dal punto di vista formale, la soluzione adottata dal Renzo Piano Building Workshop è una sorta di elegante blob urbano: un elemento di forma ricurva sollevato da terra e ricoperto da superfici vetrate. Il volume, incastonato tra gli edifici circostanti, dai quali svetta senza privarli del dovuto accesso alla luce del Sole, è completato dal retrostante giardino di betulle, mentre step successivi del progetto prevedono il restauro dell’antica facciata rivolta ad Avenue des Gobelins, con le preziose decorazioni scultoree del giovane Auguste Rodin.
Conceptions of space: recent acquisitions in contemporary architecture will remain on display in the exhibition rooms of MoMA until mid-October. This superb Museum offers visitors the opportunity to view new acquisitions for its architectural section in an exhibition curated by Pedro Gadanho, constructed around the conception of space as evolved from the beginning of the 20th century until today, in an era which Michel Foucault described as “the era of space”. On display are twenty major international projects (among the architects, Herzog & de Meuron, Álvaro Siza and Kengo Kuma, but also new names such as Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Ryue Nishizawa, Ensamble Studio, SO-IL and MOS Architects). Each one is presented to the public through scale models, drawings and designs, photos, videos and life-sized reconstructions… spaces, that tell the story of spaces, in space.

Il tempio dell’arte statunitense offre ai suoi visitatori l’opportunità di ammirare le più recenti acquisizioni della sezione architettura con una mostra, curata da Pedro Gadanho, completamente costruita attorno alla concezione dello spazio, così come essa si è costituita dall’inizio del XX secolo ad oggi, nell’era che Michel Foucault definì appunto “l’epoca dello spazio”. In questa occasione saranno esposti venti progetti internazionali (tra gli altri Herzog & de Meuron, Álvaro Siza e Kengo Kuma, ma anche nomi inediti come Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Ryue Nishizawa, Ensamble Studio, SO-IL e MOS Architects), presentati al pubblico tramite modelli, disegni, fotografie, video e ricostruzioni in scala reale… spazi, che raccontano di spazi, nello spazio.
The Aedas international studio, specialized in large- and small-scale architecture and design, has finished the Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island Building, a hospitality hub in the Wan Chai commercial district. The hotel soars to take its place proudly among neighboring skyscrapers, offering 138 standard guest rooms topped by twelve executive suites and a panoramic terrace. The architectural shell consists of four total glass sides offering fascinating views onto the city, featuring irregularly placed sunbreakers in burnished bronze. But what truly sets the building apart, like a lighthouse in the ocean of the city, is a protruding swimming pool with a glass floor that extends far beyond the perimeter of the roof garden: admired by passers-by far below, courageous swimmers relish a truly vertiginous experience!
Lo studio internazionale Aedas, specializzato in architettura e design su larga e piccola scala, ha ultimato l’Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island Building: una struttura ricettiva situata nel quartiere commerciale di Wan Chai. L’albergo, che fronteggia in altezza i vicini grattacieli, ospita 138 camere standard, sovrastate da altre dodici suite executive, per concludersi in una terrazza panoramica. L’involucro architettonico è costituito da quattro facciate completamente vetrate, che assicurano scorci visivi affascinanti sulla città, segnate con ritmo irregolare da frangisole in bronzo brunito. Ma ciò che più di ogni altra cosa caratterizza la struttura, rendendola un vero e proprio faro nel mare della città, è una piscina aggettante con fondo vetrato, che si protrae oltre il perimetro del tetto giardino: da qui i coraggiosi nuotatori possono essere invidiati dai passanti, che ammirano dal basso.
